CALM BEHAVIOUR STARTS IN THE GUT AND BRAIN

How Calm & Chill works to calm your dog

Stress in dogs is not only behavioural. It also affects the nervous system, the gut, and the body’s overall stress response. Calm & Chill supports calm from both directions: the brain, where mood and stress signals are processed, and the gut, where the microbiome helps influence resilience, behaviour and overall balance.

It supports calm through 4 connected pathways:

1. Brain chemistry linked to calm behaviour
L-tryptophan helps support serotonin balance, while taurine and B vitamins help support calming neurotransmitter activity.

2. The nervous system during stress
Magnesium, lemon balm and passion flower help support relaxation and a steadier response during tension, overstimulation or routine change.

3. The gut-brain axis
Postbiotics help support a healthier gut environment during stress, which matters because gut balance can influence mood, resilience and behaviour.

4. Whole-body stress resilience
By supporting both the nervous system and the gut, Calm & Chill helps dogs feel more settled from within, not just quieter on the surface.

The result is steadier support in stressful moments for dogs that struggle with noise, travel, separation, overstimulation or routine changes.

What to expect

With consistent daily use

Daily nervous system support for calm behaviour and emotional resilience

  1. DAYS 1 – 7

    Immediate nervous system support

L-tryptophan (serotonin precursor) and magnesium glycinate are absorbed quickly and begin contributing to normal neurotransmitter balance. Acute situational calming support — for travel, noise, visitors — starts from the very first chew. (Ref: Bosch et al., 2012; B-vitamin EU claims)

  2. WEEKS 1 – 3

    GABA pathway support

Passionflower and lemon balm contribute to GABA-ergic signalling, supporting a calmer resting state. B-vitamins (B1, B5, B12) contribute to normal energy metabolism and nervous system function, reducing the physiological stress response. (Ref: Appel et al., 2011)

  3. WEEKS 3 – 6

    Adaptogenic effects build

Ashwagandha (KSM-66 or similar standardised extract) requires several weeks for its cortisol-modulating adaptogenic effects to establish. Dogs often show measurably calmer reactions to known stress triggers in this window. (Ref: Pratte et al., 2014)

  4. WEEKS 6 – 8+

    Sustained emotional balance

Full adaptogenic benefit established. Continued daily use maintains emotional resilience and helps dogs cope better with everyday stress triggers — noise, separation, travel, overstimulation — without dulling personality.

Key Ingredients

Nature holds the power. Science unlocks it.

Every ingredient is chosen based on documented mechanisms of action and peer-reviewed evidence. Select a compound below to go deeper.

L-Tryptophan

L-Tryptophan

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that serves as a precursor for serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, emotional balance, and the body’s response to stress. Balanced serotonin levels help maintain calm behavior, support relaxation, and contribute to overall wellbeing.

Through its role in serotonin metabolism, tryptophan supports normal behavioral responses and can help dogs cope with everyday stressors such as changes in routine, travel, or environmental stimuli.

Stress and skin health are closely connected, as increased stress can influence skin sensitivity and overall skin condition. Supporting a balanced stress response can therefore also contribute to maintaining skin comfort and overall physiological resilience (Gazzano, 2021; Robinson 2020).

Magnesium glycinate

Magnesium bisglycinate

Magnesium glycinate is a highly bioavailable form of magnesium in which magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine. This form is well absorbed and gentle on the digestive system, making it suitable for regular use in nutritional formulations.

Magnesium plays an important role in muscle function by helping regulate contraction and relaxation. Adequate magnesium intake supports normal muscle relaxation, which is important for both physical comfort and smooth movement.

In addition, magnesium contributes to normal nervous system function. The presence of glycine, an amino acid involved in inhibitory neurotransmission, further supports a calming effect by helping maintain balanced nerve signaling.

Because of its role in both muscle and nerve function, magnesium glycinate is commonly included in formulations aimed at supporting relaxation, reducing tension, and maintaining overall mobility and comfort in dogs (Boomsma, 2008; Noah, 2021; Wienecke, 2016).

Algae oil (DHA-rich)

Algae oil

Algal oil is a sustainable, traceable source of omega-3s, naturally rich in DHA and often EPA, and it supports the body’s healthy inflammatory balance.

  • Joint health: Omega-3s help keep the normal inflammatory response in check, which can support more comfortable movement and recovery after exercise.
  • Skin and coat: DHA and EPA support the skin barrier, helping reduce dryness and supporting a softer, shinier coat, especially in animals prone to flaky skin or seasonal itchiness.
  • Lung health: Omega-3s can support respiratory comfort by helping maintain a balanced inflammatory response in the airways, which is relevant for pets that react to dust, pollen, or environmental triggers.

Because algal oil delivers omega-3s in a consistent way, it is a practical alternative to fish oil for long-term daily support of joints, skin, and respiratory resilience (ScienceDirect).

Lemon balm

Melissa officinalis

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a botanical herb traditionally used for its calming properties. It contains bioactive compounds such as rosmarinic acid, which have been studied for their interaction with pathways involved in relaxation and stress response.

In addition to its calming effects, lemon balm is also associated with digestive support. The gut and nervous system are closely connected, and maintaining digestive comfort can contribute to overall wellbeing and calm behavior.

Because of its dual role in supporting relaxation and digestive balance, lemon balm is often included in formulations aimed at helping dogs cope with stress while maintaining gastrointestinal comfort (Verhelst, 2025).

Vitamin B12

Cobalamin

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an essential role in energy metabolism and cellular function. It participates in enzymatic reactions involved in DNA synthesis and the formation of red blood cells, which are important for oxygen transport and overall vitality.

Vitamin B12 works closely together with folate in one-carbon metabolism, a pathway involved in the synthesis van nucleic acids and other essential biological molecules. These processes support cellular growth, tissue maintenance, and overall metabolic balance.

In addition, vitamin B12 contributes to normal nervous system function and is involved in pathways linked to mood regulation. Research shows that low vitamin B12 levels are associated with changes in mood and increased signs of stress-related conditions such as anxiety and depression. Maintaining adequate levels therefore supports overall mental balance and resilience (Todorov et al., 2017 ; Stover, 2004; Curely, 2025).

Primary benefit

Energy metabolism and cellular development support

Vitamin B6

Pyridoxine

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an essential role in amino acid metabolism and numerous enzymatic reactions in the body. It functions as a cofactor for enzymes involved in the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, supporting overall energy and nutrient utilization.

Vitamin B6 also contributes to the normal function of the nervous system by participating in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. These compounds are involved in mood regulation, behavior, and the body’s response to stress, making vitamin B6 relevant in nutritional strategies aimed at supporting calm and balanced behavior.

In addition, vitamin B6 supports immune function and contributes to normal metabolic activity in rapidly renewing tissues such as skin. A well-functioning immune system and healthy skin are important for overall resilience and wellbeing.

Because of its combined role in metabolism, nervous system function, and immune support, vitamin B6 is commonly included in formulations aimed at supporting both emotional balance and overall health in dogs (Curely, 2025).

Brewer’s yeast (inactive)

Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Brewer’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is a functional yeast ingredient naturally rich in nutrients and yeast-derived compounds such as beta-glucans, mannan-oligosaccharides, and fermentation metabolites. These components are studied for their role in supporting digestive health, immune function, and overall wellbeing in dogs.

In canine studies, Saccharomyces cerevisiae products have been shown to positively influence the gut microbiota, including increased beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, while also supporting immune markers and normal inflammatory balance.

Research in dogs also links Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation products to skin and coat support, including effects on skin sebum, antioxidant status, and immune responses. This makes brewer’s yeast especially relevant in formulations aimed at supporting gut health, skin resilience, and coat quality (Jouany et al., 2009; Davenport, 2023; Lin, 2019; Wilson, 2022).

Pectin

Pectin

Apple (Malus domestica) is a natural source of pectin, a soluble fiber known for its role in supporting digestive health. Pectin forms a gel-like structure in the gut, which helps regulate intestinal transit and contributes to normal stool consistency.

As a fermentable fiber, pectin serves as a substrate for beneficial gut bacteria. This supports a balanced microbiome, which plays an important role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall gut health.

The gut and nervous system are closely connected through the gut–brain axis. Supporting a stable gut environment can therefore contribute to overall wellbeing and a more balanced response to everyday stressors. This makes pectin relevant not only for digestive support but also as part of a broader approach to maintaining calm and comfort in sensitive animals (Wikiera, 2014; Zaitseva, 2020).
