Our vets recommend to divide the recommended amount of hay over 2 to 3 meals per day.

Three steps to ensure a smooth transition to using the hay net daily:

  1. Gradually reduce the amount of hay provided to your horse, especially if you haven't previously weighed it. Rapid weight loss isn't healthy for a horse.
  2. Initially, pull out a few strands of hay partially from the net, allowing your horse to get used to pulling them out in this manner. If your horse isn't accustomed to a hay net, it's advisable to keep an eye on him to prevent him from becoming too frustrated with the small holes.
  3. Increase your horse's access time to the hay net gradually. Start with short intervals and progressively extend them as your horse becomes more comfortable using the net. This gradual approach helps prevent frustration and ensures a smooth transition to using the hay net regularly.

Benefits of a hay net with small mesh size for horses

Better digestion

A hay net benefits horses by extending chewing time, which promotes digestion by aiding in the breakdown of food.

Healthy stomach

Continuous access to forage through a hay net promotes gastric health by preventing long periods without food, reducing the risk of ulcers.

Less boredom

A hay net reduces boredom in the stall by providing mental stimulation as the horse works to extract hay from the net.

Reduced hay wastage

A hay net minimizes hay wastage on the ground, ensuring that more of the feed is consumed rather than being trampled or soiled.

Valerie De ClerckEquine Veterinarian

"According to research, 1 out of 3 horses is overweight. Feeding hay in a hay net with a small mesh size is a good way to control food intake and keep your horse busy. It's beneficial for their mental health, stomach, and body weight management."

How much hay should I feed my horse?

We recommend to divide the daily recommended amount of hay over 2 to 3 meals per day. Ensure your horse is never without hay or roughage for longer than 4 to 6 hours.

Guidelines for feeding roughage to your horse

Feeding Frequency

Ensure that your horse is never without roughage for longer than 6 to 8 hours. This means dividing the amount of hay into 2 to 3 feedings per day.

Mesh Size

If you want to extent the feeding time, the mesh size of the hay net should not be larger than 4 cm.

Hay Quantity

Weigh the hay; a horse needing to lose weight should receive 1.5% of its body weight in hay, while a horse with a healthy weight should receive 2% of its body weight.

Transition Protocol

Feed transitions should always occur gradually. When introducing a new batch of hay, it is advisable to mix batches for 5 days.

Diet Risk

NEVER put your horse on a strict diet without hay or roughage, as this can lead to liver fat accumulation, which can be fatal.

Position Hay Net

Hang the hay net low enough so that your horse can eat with its head lower than its withers. Make sure your horse can't get tangled in the net. Variation in position is crucial; feeding at different points and in different ways allows your horse to vary its eating posture.
