Loose manure and faecal water: what the research says

With faecal water, the manure itself looks normal, but liquid passes separately. Research points to two things that help: less sugar and extra support for the gut. Here is how that works, step by step. Always have your vet rule out other causes first, such as teeth, sand or parasites.

  1. 1. Hay is always the base

It starts with the ration. Horses with faecal water don’t eat more haylage than other horses, but they do get about twice as much hard feed, with more sugar and starch and less fibre (Lindroth et al., 2021). So build the ration around hay and other long fibre.

Less hard feed, more long fibre.

  2. 2. Cut sugar, keep the nutrients

But hard feed also carries most of a horse’s vitamins and trace minerals. Cut it, and a ration of mainly hay usually falls short in copper, zinc, selenium and vitamin E. A low-sugar balancer fills those gaps without putting the sugar back.

ESTE Balancer: 4.2% sugar, 3.5% starch.

  3. 3. Support the hindgut

With the ration right, give the gut extra support while you wait for results. In horses on a high-starch diet, live yeast raised faecal pH and increased the bacteria that digest fibre (Carter et al., 2025).

Guts & Glory: live yeast and probiotics.

Two products, one routine

Cut the sugar, not the nutrients

Hay and forage are always the base. But when you cut sugary hard feed, you also cut vitamins and minerals. ESTE Balancer adds them back, low in sugar. Guts & Glory gives the gut an extra boost. This bundle gives both, in one daily routine.

  • ESTE Balancer ESTE BalancerAdds back the vitamins and minerals, low in sugar.
  • Guts & Glory Guts & GloryAn extra boost for the gut: probiotics, live yeast and L-glutamine.

What your horse gets

  • a healthy gut

Why ESTE Balancer is the base

Este Balancer compared with other balancers

Dr. Sara Torfs built Este Balancer around the deficits she kept finding in blood work. In an independent comparison of 11 leading balancers on the European market:

  • Live yeast for the hindgut: none of the other 10 balancers has it
  • Linseed oil for omega-3: the only balancer in the comparison with it
  • Lysine, methionine and threonine: only Este has all three
  • No added iron, on purpose: most horses already get plenty from forage and water
  • Only 4.2% sugar and 3.5% starch
Vitamin E
Este Balancer 1,500 IU
Average of the other 10 654 IU
Vitamin C
Este Balancer 1,000 mg
Average of the other 10 90 mg
Biotin
Este Balancer 20 mg
Average of the other 10 4.8 mg

Daily amounts at the recommended dose for a 500 kg horse.

  1. Week 1

    Settling in: build up slowly

Introduce both gradually over the first week: start with a small amount and build up to the full dose. Some horses need a few days to get used to a new smell.

  2. Weeks 2 to 4

    Gut balance

Probiotics settle in alongside prebiotic fibres. Horses with loose droppings often show clear improvement in this window.

  3. Weeks 4 to 8

    Give it time

Faecal water varies a lot from week to week. Judge each change after 3 to 4 weeks, not after a fortnight.

  4. Month 3 onwards

    Part of the routine

Many owners keep both in the ration all year. If loose manure keeps coming back, have your vet check your horse.

Frequently asked questions

Not sure the bundle fits your horse? Our vets answer questions every day.

Who is this bundle for?

Horses and ponies with loose manure, faecal water, flatulence or a sensitive stomach, especially when you cut back on sugary hard feed and need to fill the vitamin and mineral gaps. Always have your vet check first: teeth, sand, parasites and any colic history all deserve a look.

Is faecal water the same as diarrhoea?

No. With faecal water the manure itself is usually well formed, but liquid passes separately, before, during or after it. In affected horses, the manure holds less water (Lindroth et al., 2022), which is why fibre and gut support matter.

Why do I need a balancer if I cut hard feed?

Concentrates carry most of a horse’s vitamins and trace minerals. A forage-only ration usually leaves gaps in copper, zinc, selenium and vitamin E. ESTE Balancer fills those gaps with only 4.2% sugar and 3.5% starch, so you don’t put the sugar back.

Should I take my horse off haylage?

Not necessarily. In a study of 50 farms, horses with and without faecal water ate the same amount of wrapped forage. What differed was the rest of the ration: affected horses got about twice as much concentrate (Lindroth et al., 2021). Start by cutting hard feed and adding long fibre, such as straw or lucerne.

Which pack size should I choose?

Set your horse’s weight in the pack selector and each pack shows how many days it lasts for that weight. For a 500 kg horse, the small pack lasts about 1 month, the medium pack about 2 months and the large pack about 3 months. Compared with buying both separately, the small pack is 5% better value, the medium pack 7.5% and the large pack 10%. Every pack comes with a free ESTE dosage cup.

*Daily amounts and price per day at the full dose of both products for the selected horse weight. Complementary feed, not a medicinal product. To be used in support of, never as a replacement for, veterinary diagnosis and treatment.
