Medicago sativa

Alfalfa (lucerne)

Gastric support & protein

Alfalfa is a calcium-rich, protein-dense forage often used to support gastric comfort in horses, especially when stomach acid may irritate the upper (squamous) stomach. In research, horses fed alfalfa had higher gastric pH and fewer, less severe squamous lesions compared with some grass-hay diets, suggesting a buffering effect when used appropriately in the ration. It also supplies highly usable protein and key minerals that can helpmaintaintopline and overall condition in growing horses, broodmares, and hard keepers. (Nadeau et al., 2000; Verhelst, 2025)
