How much hay should I feed my horse?

We recommend to divide the daily recommended amount of hay over 2 to 3 meals per day. Ensure your horse is never without hay or roughage for longer than 4 to 6 hours.

Guidelines for feeding roughage to your horse

Feeding Frequency

Ensure that your horse is never without roughage for longer than 6 to 8 hours. This means dividing the amount of hay into 2 to 3 feedings per day.

Mesh Size

If you want to extent the feeding time, the mesh size of the hay net should not be larger than 3.5 cm.

Hay Quantity

Weigh the hay; a horse needing to lose weight should receive 1.25% of its body weight in hay, while a horse with a healthy weight should receive 1.5% to 2% of its body weight.

Transition Protocol

Feed transitions should always occur gradually. When introducing a new batch of hay, it is advisable to mix batches for 5 days.

Diet Risk

NEVER put your horse on a strict diet without hay or roughage, as this can lead to liver fat accumulation, which can be fatal.

Position Hay Net

Hang the hay net low enough so that your horse can eat with its head lower than its withers. Make sure your horse can't get tangled in the net. Variation in position is crucial; feeding at different points and in different ways allows your horse to vary its eating posture.
